What is PTO?
The DCG PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is comprised of active and inactive members from the Dallas Center and Grimes communities. The PTO supports the Elementary Schools. The activities of the PTO are designed to support the school and its educational goals, to educate parents and the community about the issues the school faces, and to promote school spirit.
What does DC-G’s PTO do for our Elementary Schools?
Through volunteering from many people, our PTO is able to support many causes within our schools. We hold only one fundraiser keeping half of the proceeds for our profit. This has been the Entertainment Book sales.
- WE have informational speakers at many of our regular meetings.
- WE actively collect the General Mills Box Tops at the schools, libraries, and grocery stores. As of the Fall 2006 contest, we ranked #4 out of 1217 schools in Iowa, and ranked #92 out of 92,865 schools in the U.S.A.!! Each box top is worth $.10 cash!!
- WE collect Campbell’s soup labels. By sending in these labels, we select products from a catalog for our schools.
- WE will start collecting Tyson food labels in Fall 2007. They will bring us $.24 for each label in cash.
- WE provide our hard-working teachers dinners to say thank-you. We do this during both parent-teacher conferences and teacher appreciation week.
- WE hold two book fairs a year at each of the elementary schools during conferences time. This provides parents and teachers the opportunity to select quality books for our children to read.
- WE create a yearbook for our elementary students to purchase at a low price to help them remember their years at DC-G.
- WE assist with many of the functions that our students participate in; for example Art Night, Fun Run and Geography Bee.
- WE use a local apparel store to sell clothing with the DC-G logo at low prices to support school spirit within our district.
- WE sponsor Spring photographs to record how our children have grown throughout the year .
- WE provide each Elementary teacher in our district with an $85 reimbursement for supplies they purchase for their classrooms.
- WE provide a “Principal’s Fund” for each building. The principals are able to use these funds for student rewards and incentives.
- WE have organized fun Movie nights and Skate nights for DC-G students and families to participate in.
Thank you to everyone that has helped support PTO this year!!!!!!
How were the profits spent? Several of the projects and activities PTO sponsors are designed to earn money for the schools. Funds raised have been used the following ways:
*Entertainment Book profits: -In 2002-03 donated $21,000 to purchase leveled books for the guided reading program. -In 2003-04 donated $12,000 for computer equipment for classrooms and computer lab. -In 2004-05 donated $20,000 for playground improvement *Purchased books for the libraries at the Dallas Center Elementary and Grimes Elementary. *Started a "Principal" fund of $600 for each elementary principal to use for student rewards and incentives. *Sponsored the Fun Run Day and purchased apples, medals, and T-shirts for the participants. *Donated $74 to each teacher for their classroom purchases. *Provided film and the cost of development for classroom pictures for each building. *Purchased student planners for fourth and fifth graders *Donated indoor recess games and classroom supplies with Box Tops proceeds ($4,000).
How do I get involved? You can be an active PTO member or an inactive member. The membership cost is $5.00. As an active member you can join a committee and help plan upcoming activities. Join PTO as an inactive member and know that PTO appreciates your support and dues. You membership dues support the ongoing activities of the PTO. You can obtain a membership application at either elementary building.
When does PTO meet? PTO meets on the second Monday of each month (except December and summer months) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school libraries. The meetings alternate between Dallas Center and Grimes to both communities may be more involved.
What can I do to support PTO in the summer? Whether you join PTO or not, you can support the PTO throughout the year by: -Saving box tops (each box top is worth $0.10 at the school) -saving Campbell's labels (other labels qualify also, Franco American, Prego, and Pepperidge farm) -saving Tyson A+ labels (each is worth $0.24)
Thank You! Thanks to everyone who helped support the PTO in the past. Whether you helped with an activity, attended an activity, purchased books at the book fair, or purchased an Entertainment Book, the PTO appreciates you support. |
